Wrongly convicted man to be freed
DETROIT -- A Wayne County judge ordered a 45-year-old Detroit man released from prison after authorities said he was wrongly convicted.

Bruce Carl Toney has served 18 months in prison after his June 2002 conviction of felony firearm and possession with intent to deliver less than 50 grams of cocaine. After processing by Corrections Department officials, he will be released as early as today. He was sentenced to up to 22 years in prison, but could have been freed as early as November 2004.

On Thursday, Wayne Circuit Judge Brian Sullivan granted a request by Wayne County prosecutors to set aside Toney's conviction.

Toney is the first man to be freed stemming from a grand jury indictment of 16 Detroit police officers, and two former officers on corruption charges. They've been accused of illegal searches, false arrests and planting evidence. ...
